Why Groundwater Visibility Matters: Protecting Your Drinking Water

May 22, 2025

Well Water Finders guest article featured on KnowYourH2O Water Blog about groundwater visibility and drinking water protection

We’re honored to be featured on the KnowYourH2O Water Blog, a trusted resource for water testing, education, and protection. In our guest article, Why Groundwater Visibility Matters: Key Steps to Protecting Your Drinking Water, we highlight why understanding groundwater levels isn’t just important, it’s essential for anyone who relies on a private well. From rural landowners to municipalities, visibility into subsurface water conditions is the first step to securing clean, sustainable access to drinking water.

Why Visibility Below the Surface Matters

When most people think about water quality, they focus on what comes out of the tap. But just as important, if not more so, is where that water comes from. According to the EPA, over 43 million Americans rely on private wells. Unlike municipal systems, these wells aren’t centrally monitored, so it’s up to the well owner to stay informed.

That’s where groundwater visibility comes in. Knowing what’s happening below the surface is your first line of defense in protecting your water supply.

"Protecting your water means understanding your land, your well, and what’s going on beneath your feet."
— Andrew Vandekop, Well Water Finders for KnowYourH2O

The Essential Role of Water Testing

Regular testing is critical for anyone with a private well. At a minimum, well owners should test once a year for bacteria, nitrates, and contaminants specific to their region and more frequently if taste, smell, or color changes occur, or after flooding events. Testing ensures that problems are caught early, before they affect health.

Well Placement, Depth, and Aquifer Types

At Well Water Finders, we specialize in surveying groundwater aquifers to help landowners and drillers make informed decisions about well placement and depth. Key insights include:

  • Estimated depth to groundwater beneath a property

  • Whether the aquifer is actively flowing or perched

  • Likely water quality based on aquifer depth

Generally, deeper aquifers are safer and cleaner, while shallow or perched aquifers are more vulnerable to contamination.

Don’t Overlook Surface Inspections

While groundwater visibility is critical, protecting your well also requires vigilance above ground. Regular land inspections help identify fuel spills, chemical leaks, or waste that can seep into the soil and contaminate wells. Even small spills can migrate underground, affecting not just your well but neighboring water supplies.

The Bottom Line: Prevention Starts with Visibility

Groundwater intelligence, surface awareness, and routine water testing work together to protect your drinking water. By understanding your land, your well, and what’s happening beneath your feet, you’re taking the most important step in securing a safe and sustainable water supply.
